The Retreat

Das Retreat liegt am Ufer des Ruaha River, fernab in der einsamen Nordwestecke des Selous Game Reserve. Die Luxuslodge bietet Ihnen ein ursprüngliches Safarierlebnis im Einklang mit der Natur. Von Ihrem Zelt am Hügel beobachten Sie die umherziehenden Wildtiere. Sie erreichen die Lodge am besten per Flugzeug ab Dar Es Salaam oder Ruaha.

Das Selous Game Reserve ist ein weitgehend unbekanntes Wildreservat südlich der Hauptstadt Dar Es Salaam im südlichen Tansania. Mit einer Fläche von 55.000km² ist es das größte Reservat Afrikas. Das Selous-Wildreservat beherbergt die wahrscheinlich größte zusammenhängende Elefantenpopulation in Afrika, obwohl die Anzahl der Elefanten von 109.000 Tieren im Jahr 1977 durch ständiges Wildern auf unter 30.000 zurückgegangen ist. Zusätzlich leben im Selous 150.000 Gnus, 100.000 Büffel und weit über 50.000 Zebras und Impalas. Alle großen afrikanischen Raubtierarten sind im Selous Game Reserve anzutreffen. Die Flußsysteme im Selous sind Heimat für tausende Krokodile und Flußpferde.
 

The Retreat’ is a new luxury safari destination, situated in a most remote corner of the Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania, far from other camps and lodges, assuring total privacy and an undisturbed individual experience of the African bush.

It is the place to re-awaken the senses and the soul, chilling out in luxury of services, design, natural materials and overwhelming views and sounds while exploring the remote bush and studying the undisturbed behaviour of wildlife, large and small, surrounding the lodge.

Aware of the privilege to build in an area virtually untouched for centuries, the lodge was built with thoughtful care and respect towards nature, in this special place on top of a small hill and on the shores of the mighty Ruaha River. A striking location, discovered by one of the owners, following both a long-standing love and appreciation of the Selous, and weeks of searching the bush on foot.

                      

On the small hill, remains of a military observation point from World War 1 have been found. This led to the concept to utilize this historical aspect, by creating a fort as the main house as well as to use the influences of the great East African market, when dhows transported supplies, textiles, furniture and decorative elements from Asia, Arabia and various African countries. These historical elements are reflected in the design of ‘The Retreat’. Additionally, the principles of the five elements, together with Feng Shui architecture has been used.

History, multicultural influences, a holistic architectural approach, and above all the remoteness of the untouched African bush on the shores of the winding Ruaha River –combined with the passion and love by its owners - has created a very special atmosphere , that is ‘The Retreat’.

Accommodation and Services
Guests have the choice to be accommodated either within a comfortable distance of the main lodge on top of the hill, in one of six standard hill tents, each enjoying an eagle view, or on the river bank, close to the water, in one of three private river suites, with individual plunge pool and look out deck. The forth river suite is a special honeymoon suite (also great for a family) on a 200m2 platform with two separate tents and a plunge pool with roofed chill out area.

For guests, wishing even greater privacy, the private Hippo point with its own infinity pool, bar, dining, and butler services, will appeal.

All tents are made up of two layers - a strong mosquito net as an inner wall and one heavy duty canvas outside , which can be fully open to the sounds, the breeze, and full view of nature, or to be individually closed in various different modes to allow the desired privacy of each occupant. Each 6.5m high tent is based on a 100sqm teak platform and contains a large bed, lounge, and an outdoor bath tub, plus indoor bathroom , toilet and shower facilities, sitting and writing area.

Tents have been positioned at least 30 – 50 m apart, as well as on different levels; relaxation and dining areas are also a good distance apart. Indeed, ‘The Selous Retreat’ takes pride in caring for the needs of all guests and respect for their privacy.
 

Activities
Guest at The Retreat, besides relaxing in the lodge various areas and observing avian and fauna wildlife nearby, can partake in various activities:

- sundowners

All open 4WD vehicles, equipped with a winch, have been customized for driving on various graded dirt roads and tracks, often sandy, leading to and from the lodge. Accordingly, vehicles are lighter than in other areas of Selous or Northern Tanzania . The lightweight, flat bottomed aluminium boats have been tailor-made to suit the conditions of the Ruaha River. All vehicles and boats are equipped with radio communication and an armed guard escorts guests during the walking safaris. During Game drives and Boat cruises, an experienced guide escorts guests. Taking into consideration prevailing weather conditions and guests’ requests, ‘The Retreat’ can set up bush breakfasts, bush lunches, bush sundowners and bush dinners, where freshly prepared food would be cooked on an open fire by one of our experienced cooks, and served at a nicely prepared table .
